Vic: Yakka factory to close, union

A union says Yakka, the company founded on the image of hard-wearing, all-Australianwork gear, is to close a regional Victorian factory early in the new year.

The Australian Workers Union says closure of the Shepparton factory will put 70 employees, mostly single mothers, out of work in mid-February.

Yakka Australia met with the AWU today to negotiate the redundancy payouts for theShepparton workers.

AWU organiser ASHLEY COX says the company has offered to transfer two or three employeesfrom Shepparton to its Wodonga plant, 150 kms away.

Mr COX says the timing of the factory closure, several weeks after the start of theShepparton area's fruit picking season, could result in the redundant workers missingout on the only jobs available in packing sheds.

Yakka Australia has been sought for comment.
